Summary

The Fisheries Act governs the management of fisheries resources and habitats and sets out the rules and penalties for day-to-day conservation and management.

The Aboriginal Communal Fishing Licenses Regulations allow the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans to issue communal licenses to Aboriginal communities for fishing and other related activities and to fix the terms and conditions of those licenses.

Terms and conditions may include, among other things:

• authorization for the sale of fish harvested under the license;
• who can fish under the license; and
• reports about, and inspection of, catches.
