The Canadian Forest Service (CFS) has adopted a national network-based approach for the delivery of its Science & Technology Program (S&T). These networks will allow the CFS to address national and international issues while delivering research activities through national research centres. The S&T Networks are involved in developing knowledge and tools for the sustainable development of Canadian forests. Forest research contractors are often involved in specific research projects.

Eligibility Criteria

Information is available to the general public, forest resource managers and forestry research contractors. The eligibility criteria for potential contractors are dependent on the scientific requirements of individual projects.

Summary

The Canadian Forest Service Science and Technology Program involves research into most areas of forest resource management, and is focused on the development of knowledge and tools for sustainable forestry. Areas of particular emphasis include:

  • understanding the fundamental processes, functions and dynamics of Canada's forest ecosystem;
  • monitoring and analyzing the state of forest ecosystems;
  • developing and promoting better ways for protecting and enhancing the health, diversity and productivity of Canada's forest ecosystems;
  • developing methods for enhancing timber production;
  • developing the integrated knowledge, tools and techniques required for the implementation of holistic and sustainable management of forest ecosystems;
  • assisting in the application and commercialization of environmentally sound systems and technology.

The S&T Networks cover five main areas of sustainable forest management and will be better suited to create partnerships and alliances, between the CFS and outside agencies, to undertake specific projects and to identify and address strategic national issues.

The following five Science and Technology Networks have been established:

  • Climate Change and Fire Research Network;
  • Enhanced Timber Production and Protection Network;
  • Forest Ecosystem Processes Network;
  • Forest Health and Biodiversity Network;
  • Knowledge and Information Synthesis Network.

Forestry information and further details of existing opportunities can be obtained from a Forestry Centre.
