Egg Inspection Program

Under the Canada Agricultural Products Act, the Egg Inspection Program's mandate is to ensure that shell eggs and processed egg products leaving federally-registered establishments for interprovincial and export trade or being imported into Canada, are safe, meet standards including grading, and are packaged and labelled to avoid misleading consumers and to facilitate orderly marketing.

Eligibility Criteria

The CFIA inspection program for shell eggs and processed egg products is directed primarily at federally registered establishments and international trade.

Summary

The major activities undertaken by CFIA staff under this program include:

  • registration of egg grading stations and manufacturers of prepared egg products;
  • inspection and certification of domestically produced egg products, and exports;
  • residue testing;
  • policy and program development for food labelling and label verification; and
  • verifying that food advertising complies with requirements.
