May 1, 2008 PROVINCE SENDS EMERGENCY MEASURES OFFICIALS TO FLOOD-RAVAGED NEW BRUNSWICK– – –Manitoba Shares Flood Response Management Expertise In Response to Request: Doer The province is sending Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) officials with flood management experience to assist the province of New Brunswick as record-level floodwaters from the swollen
St. John River flow into the capital region of Fredericton, Premier Gary Doer announced today. “The people of Manitoba can certainly empathize with the residents of the Fredericton region as they prepare, watch and wait to see what the rising waters will do,” said Doer. “Manitoba is living up to its commitment to act immediately to assist New Brunswick in times of need.”
Doer and the New Brunswick premier signed a mutual assistance agreement in 2003 to manage any emergency or disaster, whether arising from natural or man-made causes.
The executive director, the director of emergency operations and a senior emergency officer from Manitoba EMO will share flood response management experiences and provide assistance in New Brunswick, where there are reports of road washouts, evacuations of homes and businesses, closure of the provincial Legislative Building, city hall, courthouse and all schools in the capital city.
