It is a community-based crime prevention program designed to develop partnerships among youth, police, Justice personnel and the community in order to promote opportunities for youth to get involved in pro-social, recreational, and crime prevention activities.
Programs like Lighthouses can have tremendous benefits for participants. Statistics Canada’s National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth Series recently concluded that children who participate in organized activities outside of school tend to have higher self-esteem, interact better with friends and perform somewhat better in school.
Lighthouses offer youth positive environments and will operate in many communities throughout Manitoba. Activities usually take place at least once a week.

The provincial funding contribution, which is up to $1,000 per month, can cover as much as half of the total cost of running a program. The other portion must come from alternate sources, which can include services in-kind, from the host location and its partners.
