KidSport™

Children and Sport

Physical activity and sport for children are necessary for optimum physical development, nurturing skills and talent, and for establishing active ways of life that will result in physical confidence and improved self-esteem. Children who participate in organized sport are higher in perceived competence, are more persistent, and have higher expectations for success than children who do not participate in organized sport (Roberts, Kleiber, and Duda, 1981). Sport can enhance the quality of life for children and youth. It is important to provide the widest possible opportunities for young people to participate in physical activity and sport.

Sport provides children with the opportunities to set realistic goals and to strive to be the best that they can be...Sport provides young participants with opportunities to dream.

Through sport, young participants learn that their life is not dependent of others. They learn how to cope with the impact that other people, such as other players, coaches, and parents, have on their lives.

Sport generates economic growth and development, job creation, business and employment opportunities that all contribute to the quality of life in the NWT.

"Children who participate in 5 hours of physical activity a week have significantly higher marks in academic programs than children who do not participate in physical activity (Stuart, 1992)".

Well structured physical activity programs for children play a significant role in developing self esteem.

KidSport Fund ™

KidSport Fund™ is a national charity that brings sport and needy kids together - so all kids can play.

The facts are clear, more young people than ever before are faced with harsh financial realities. The barriers to simply playing and having fun are getting higher and higher. It is also clear that kids and amateur sport are a powerfully rewarding combination, producing great results. Results that last a lifetime and take so little to get started. You can help, so all kids can play.

First though, you should know that all funds are used to help children 18 and under reach their potential. KidSport™ clears the way for kids to get involved by providing support for registration fees, community programs, and by making sure they've got the equipment they need.

Mission

The KidSport™ mission is to overcome the financial obstacles that prevent some people from playing sports.

Program Objectives

KidSport™ identifies the needs of the community and supports programs, which in keeping with the mission, creates new opportunities for young people to participate in sport. KidSport™ believes young people can learn more than athletic skills from sport. Sport provides a lifelong opportunity for self-expression and self-discovery.

Sport's challenges can teach children the value of honesty, practice, hard work, and positive thinking. One hundred percent of the money raised will be directed to NWT children participating in organized sports. An allocation from the Fund is based on the written approval of the child's school principal, social worker, or member of the clergy, who has first hand knowledge of his/her circumstances.

Program History

KidSport™ is a program that originated in British Columbia by Sport BC and was adopted as a national program in 1993 by the Canadian Council of Provincial and Territorial Sport Federations (CCP & TSF). Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have all initiated the program in their provinces, with the most recent chapter occurring in the Northwest Territories.

Program Component

KidSport Fund™: Money is raised through contributions by the corporate sector, as well as through special activities and events, in order to help pay for programs and offset registration fees so that all children can play.
