Blow-outs
Summer means busier highways. A blow-out on the highway can result in a loss of control, especially if it's a front wheel--and at highway speeds that can be deadly.
So, what should you do if a tire blows-out on the way to cottage country?
- Front tire blow-outs are certainly more serious than rear. When a front tire blows, expect a sharp pull to one side and don't hit the brakes--our driving experts say that's the last thing you should do.
- First, hold the steering wheel firmly to maintain control, take your foot off the accelerator without touching the brake pedal, and let the vehicle slow down gradually.
- Once your speed is reduced enough
for you to maintain steering control, brake lightly and pull onto the shoulder
two wheels at a time. If you can, leave yourself some room for the tire-changing
chore ahead of you.
