Driving Tips > The 60-Second Driver
Child Safety
Children can be unpredictable around
roadways, and with summer approaching, we'll need
to pay a lot more attention to our driving in areas
where kids may be playing nearby.
Research shows that road related accidents are one of the leading causes of death for Manitoba children. We can help by looking for signs that kids are playing in the area. Some of those signs may include a ball on a front yard or a tricycle at the end of a driveway.
Children are most often struck by a car when they
dart into the roadway or run between parked cars.
So when you're in a residential area or near a
playground, always lower your speed and be prepared
to stop suddenly.
In May and June, school zones need special attention from drivers. In a school zone, it's illegal to pass another car within 15 minutes of the start or end of the school day.... and the Highway Traffic Act states that children on or near the roadway means we must slow down or stop! Stay alert, and keep our children from traffic accidents.
