Driving Tips > The 60-Second Driver
Four-Way Stops
4-way stops are common
in Winnipeg and the first rule on how to use them
is obvious--the first one there should proceed first.
But it becomes more complicated when two cars arrive at the same time.
When this happens, the driver directly to the right of the other should go first. But it's different if two cars arrive at the same time in opposite directions. In this case, the car turning left must give way.
What if 4 cars arrive
at the same time?
There's no written law that outlines the procedure to follow when this happens, but at Manitoba Public Insurance we teach our driver ed students to be co-operative and patient and, above all, cautious.
Impatient drivers cause accidents and a 4-way stop is where you'll find a lot of those drivers. So use courteous hand signals, be patient, and you'll avoid an embarrassing accident.
