Driving Tips > The 60-Second Driver
Work Zones
Recently, a 4-year survey documented 571 work zone collisions -- that's just in Manitoba. There are a number of things that you, as a driver, can do to help relieve the aggravation caused by construction zones and lower the number of accidents.
When passing a construction zone:
- Expect the unexpected. Speed limits will be lower, lanes will be changed and people and vehicles will be working on or near the road.
- Leave extra stopping distance in case the vehicle ahead has to stop suddenly for something unexpected.
- Try not to crowd the barricades. If you knock one over, a worker could get injured.
- Slow down. Workers are usually very close to the moving traffic and the equipment being used and may not see or hear you coming. Speed limits are normally 60 km/h in rural work zones and 30 - 40 km/h in urban areas. A conviction for speeding through a work zone carries a fine of hundreds of dollars.
Following these tips, and co-operating with other drivers will allow traffic to flow more efficiently and help keep our road workers safe.
