Driving Tips > The 60-Second Driver
Running Amber Lights
You're driving along at the speed limit,
and you've been lucky enough to catch all the green lights along the way...you
may even make it home a few minutes early. Then the light just ahead turns
amber. What should you do? If you speed up, you may not make it home at all!
If you're thinking about running the amber light, think about the risk. The few seconds you gain at this intersection will most likely be spent sitting at the red light one block ahead with the same group of traffic. Besides, you've probably exceeded the speed limit going through the amber light.
When running amber you risk colliding with other vehicles going through the intersection in anticipation of their light changing to green. Is it worth the risk? Amber means caution, so be patient... and get home safely.
