School Bus Safety
Whenever you approach a school bus with flashing lights or other warning devices, whether you're approaching it from the front or rear, you must stop at least 5 metres from the bus and remain stopped until the signal is turned off or the bus starts up again.
A school bus with flashing
amber lights means it's about to stop. You must prepare to stop.
You need not stop when approaching a school bus from the opposite direction of a divided highway, provided there is a physical separation such as a median between the two roads. However, you must slow down and watch out for children.
NOTE: A double solid line is not a physical separation.
You must stop your vehicle no less than
5 metres from the bus when approaching from either direction.
If you see a school bus stopped at a railway crossing, you can pass the bus as long as it is safe to do so. In this situation, it is still a good idea to slow down and check for trains or maintenance vehicles on the tracks.
Close to roadways, kids can be unpredictable so it’s important to drive carefully and be prepared for the unexpected.
School buses are easy to see. They’re painted brightly, and they have extra lighting. This all helps us take the safe route when it comes to school buses.
