Stop Signs
At a stop sign, you must come to a complete stop at the appropriate places, as shown below.
Before proceeding from a stopped position, you must check for pedestrians waiting to cross the street, and yield the right-of-way.
When pedestrians are clear, you may slowly move forward for a better view of traffic and, when safe to do so, you may proceed to turn or cross the street.
A stop sign is a traffic control device telling you that you must stop for the intersection. It does not indicate where to stop.
The illustrations below explain the correct places for stopping:

If there is no stop line or marked crosswalk at the intersection, stop before the sidewalk, out of the way of pedestrians. |

Yield Right-of-Way Signs
A yield sign means slow down as you near an intersection. Check for pedestrians
and traffic. If there is traffic or pedestrians, stop and yield right-of-way.
These signs are usually located where a lane or road merges with another lane or road. You must slow down and be prepared to stop. Be careful when checking traffic so you don't run into the car ahead of you.
