Jobs in Aviation in the Northwest Territories
Aviation is one of the fastest growing industries in the Northwest Territories. Some NWT communities are not accessible by road during many months of the year, and both passengers and freight must be transported by air. The aviation industry also serves the territory's growing mining and energy sectors.

The Department of Transportation's employment opportunities, including opportunities in Aviation, can be found on our Employment page.

The GNWT Department of Education, Culture, and Employment has developed an excellent publication called
Jobs in Aviation which outlines the various opportunities for those wanting to pursue an aviation career.

For a breakdown of the different training opportunities available in aviation in Canada, and a link to the schools offering that training, please go to our Aviation Training page.

You can pursue training for an aviation-related career while still living in the North. The Buffalo School of Aviation has a number of short term courses dealing with dangerous goods, ramp services, Canadian aviation regulations, aviation occupational safety and health, and others.

In addition, there are a number of programs which support an aviation career for which courses can be taken by distance education. For example, Grant MacEwan Community College offers a distance education option for their Aviation Management program. 15 of the 60 credits under the program are granted once the student completes a Transport-Canada approved commercial flying program. Almost any degree or diploma program leading to an aviation-related career will recognize at least some credits from an on-line college or university program.

Financial assistance is available for those interested in a career in aviation. The Aviation Career Development Program offers 12 $5,000 scholarships each year (and 16 in 2008!) for NWT students pursuing full-time aviation-related training if they intend to work in the North. Student Financial Assistance also provides financial support to NWT students.

For those interested in being a northern pilot, there is a write-up in Up Here Magazine of Willy Laserich, the last of the great northern bush pilots. Willy died last year at 75 after an extraordinary aviation career in which he flew more than 5,000 medevacs and compiled more than 40,000 flight hours.
