Information for Commercial Carriers
Commercial carriers are a vital part of the Northwest Territories economy. The Department of Transportation provides many services to commercial carriers operating in the NWT. All legal loads in transit to the NWT must purchase fuel tax and registration permits before entering the territory. Permits can be purchased at one of our scales.
NSC applications
All base plated carriers in the NWT must have an active NSC number issued to them. Any commercial vehicle weighing more than 4,500 kilograms or any bus with a seating capacity greater than 10 (including the driver) must be registered. Complete the attached application form entitled NSC Application and send to the address on the last page of this form.
Extension of hours permits
Any carrier requiring an extension of hours permit can complete the attached application entitled Extension of Hours Application and send it to the address at the top right corner of the form.
Other permit applications
All permits, including over-dimensional, over-weight, extended length, special, annual, pole truck, fuel tax and registration must be purchased before entering the NWT. Contact any scale for information and to purchase these permits. For prices and scale locations, click here.
