Before you go...

Plan Ahead
Do some homework so you can spend your holiday enjoying yourself instead of searching for accommodations and directions. Plan you route with maps and this guide, available free through Travel Manitoba and at CAA locations.
Be "Reserved."
Avoid disappointment by making advance reservations for hotels, attractions and events, and keep a list of these telephone numbers handy for quick changes. If changes are made, check if the original booking has a cancellation penalty. Use toll-free numbers when booking and have a calendar and credit card at hand.

Make a List
Leave a list of traveller's cheques and credit card numbers with relatives in case of loss or theft.

Border Crossing?
If you're travelling out of your home province or state, protect yourself against extra medical expenses with travel health insurance and make sure you have ample medication.

If your Flying
Be careful with you luggage. Use your business address on luggage tags so you don't advertise an empty house. Lock your luggage and never leave it unattended.

While you're away...

Don't Flash Your Cash
Carry as little as possible. Pay be credit card or traveller's cheques for large expenses. Buy traveller's cheques in small denominations and know how to replace them. Divide your cash among family members and consider wearing a money belt.

Be Smart at Your Hotel
Make sure door locks work properly and use the dead bolt. Know where the fire and emergency exits are located. Don't open your door to any strangers. Verify hotel staff with a call to the front desk before giving access to your room.

Stash Your Cash
If you must travel with large amounts of cash, jewelry or expensive sports or camera equipment, ask hotel staff for a safe deposit box outside your room.

Dining out?
Reservations are important at most major city restaurants.

Show Them Who You Are
Carry photo ID with you at all times.

If You're Driving, Don't Forget Common Sense Safety to Protect Your Valuables
Lock your doors, use an anti-theft device, close all windows, lock valuables in the trunk or stow them out of sight. Park in well-lit areas. Never leave keys in ignition or spare keys in the car.
