Community Health Nurse (CHN) Development Program

Community Health Nurse (CHN) Development Program

The CHN Development Program (CHNDP) offers new graduates and Registered Nurses (RN), who have less then two years of practical experience, the opportunity to advance their careers as a Community Health (Outpost) Nurse in the Northwest Territories.

As an individualized competency-based program, the CHNDP provides experience in various areas in order to prepare RNs for the expanded scope of practice in community health centres located throughout the Northwest Territories within one of seven Health and Social Service Authorities.

Full training and mentoring support is provided in addition to salary, for up to two years, or until full competencies have been acquired and independent practice is achieved.

RNs who are accepted into the CHNDP will be hired directly as an underfill. Underfills initially receive 90% of a CHN salary. If performance is satisfactory, salary will be increased to 95% after twelve months. 100% of CHN salary will be received once full competencies have been acquired and independent practice is achieved. To view complete job descriptions of specific Community Health Nurse positions visit the GNWT Employment Opportunities page.

RN’s supported through the CHNDP will be required to sign a Return of Service Agreement. This means the RN agrees to work in a specified CHN position for a period of time equivalent to the developmental period at 100% of CHN salary. For example, a RN requiring 18 months to complete the CHNDP will be required to provide 18 months of service as a CHN in the Northwest Territories.

The level of knowledge commonly required for a RN to move into the role of a CHN is the successful completion of a Nursing Degree (BsN) and two years experience in an acute care setting or northern health centre. RNs with this level of experience should apply directly on a specific CHN competition.
