Land Designation

Provincial Park

Landscape Description

Rivers Provincial Park is located just east of the Town of Rivers, along the north shore of Lake Wahtopanah, a reservoir on the Little Saskatchewan River in the Souris Till Plain Natural Region.

Outstanding Features

The park serves as an important regional recreational resource for residents and visitors to south-western Manitoba, and provides camping, fishing, picnicking, beach day use and boat access to Lake Wahtopanah .

Directly north of the park is a 50 hectare parcel of Crown land often referred to as the “Rivers Prairie”.  This nearly unaltered patch of mixed grass prairie is located on the bank of an ancient glacial spillway.  Intact mixed grass prairie is scarce in this natural region due to agricultural activities.  This area is also of cultural significance, as it includes an ancient burial site, and a petroform has been identified nearby.

Classified with a Backcountry Land Use Category, meaning it is protected from logging, mining and hydroelectric development, this small but valuable piece of Manitoba ’s natural heritage is now part of Rivers Provincial Park, and is the newest land addition to the provincial park system.
