Protected Areas Initiative
Manitoba's Network of Protected Areas
Since the start of the Protected Areas
Initiative in 1990, the area of protected lands has increased from 350,000 hectares to
just over 5.4 million hectares in 2006. Approximately 8.4% of Manitoba's lands are
protected.

Manitoba's Newest Protected Areas
Manitoba's current network of
protected areas is made up of a collection of provincial and
federally designated lands:
- Manigotagan
River Provincial Park
- Rivers
Provincial Park Addition
- Chitek Lake Park Reserve Renewal -
Poplar/Nanowin
Rivers Park Reserve Renewal
- Armit Meadows
Ecological Reserve

Birch River Ecological Reserve
- Brokenhead
Wetland Ecological Reserve

and Tom Shay Ecological Reserve
- Little
George Island Ecological Reserve
- Bell
and Steeprock Canyons Protected Area
Private lands also contribute
to Manitoba's network of protected areas. This is made
possible through the use of the Conservation Agreements Act or other
legal mechanisms such as Memorandums of Agreement.
