  • Superannuation: GNWT employees are members of the federal Public Service Superannuation Plan. This pension plan provides benefits on retirement, based on your salary and length of service. The retirement benefit is 2 percent of the average of your best paid five years of service times the number of years of service. Like every pension plan there are a number of conditions and restrictions that need to be reviewed before making final plans

  • Supplementary Death Benefit (SDB): This provides a benefit equal to twice your salary, payable to your appointed beneficiary.

  • Disability Insurance (DI): This provides up to 70% of salary if you become disabled and cannot do your job. Long Term Disability (LTD) replaces this insurance for employees excluded from the union.

  • Public Service Health Care Plan (PSHCP): This is an optional benefit and covers 80% of the cost of such items as prescription drugs, ambulance fees, eyeglasses, specialist services and prostheses. When you make a claim there is an annual deductible fee.

  • Dental Insurance: The GNWT pays the dental premiums for this optional benefit. Coverage takes effect six months after the date you start work. The plan covers 100% of most dental care expenses, except major restorative work. There is a yearly deductible fee.

  • NWT Health Coverage: This is available without fees to all residents of the NWT and coverage begins three months after your arrival in the NWT. You must register with the plan to receive benefits.

  • Employee and Family Assistance Program: The Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) is a voluntary, confidential short term free counseling advisory and information service for GNWT employees and their immediate family members. • Types of Leave The Government offers a variety of leave to meet the family and personal needs of all employees. These include:

After two years, five days is added; after 15 years another five days is added and after 20 years another five days is added. The Government offers a unique benefit in that after six months of service you can take your full vacation entitlement for the fiscal year. From then on, you can take up to your full annual vacation entitlement any time during the year. You don’t have to wait to earn the leave before you take it. You can carry forward up to one year’s entitlement to the following fiscal year.

    • Winter Bonus Leave If you take vacation leave between October 1 and March 31, you are entitled to take a paid bonus day for every consecutive five days of vacation leave taken – a 20 percent vacation time bonus!

    • Sick Leave You earn one and a quarter day of paid sick leave for each month you work. There is no limit to the accumulation of sick leave, so you can build up a good cushion against serious illness or injury.

    • Special Leave You earn half a day of paid special leave for each month that you work. Special leave is used for such things as having to stay home to take care of a sick child, or a death or marriage in your family.
