Air quality operating approval renewed for PCS Sussex (08/04/28)

NB 564

April 28, 2008

FREDERICTON (CNB) - A new air quality approval will be issued to Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan Inc. (PCS Sussex) to operate its potash mine and associated mill complex in New Brunswick this June.

Environment Minister Roland Haché made the announcement today.

The facility is located about 10 kilometres east of the Town of Sussex. The company's current air quality operating approval expires on June 15.

"As this facility meets the requirements of the Air Quality Regulation of the Clean Air Act, I'm pleased to renew its operating approval for a period of five years, effective June 16, 2008," Haché said.

The renewal follows a public consultation exercise that included a 120-day public review period between Nov. 28, 2007 and March 28, 2008. Questions and comments raised by the public during that period have been addressed in the Final Summary of Issues and Responses, and require no further formal consideration.

"Good air quality is a key part of not only New Brunswickers' quality of life, but also a sustainable environment," Haché said. "Our government is working to maintain good air quality throughout the province to protect people's health, promote environmental sustainability, and keep New Brunswick poised to achieve self-sufficiency by 2026."

Documentation supporting the review process included a facility profile, draft and intended approvals, and summaries of issues raised and responses to those issues as applicable. This information may be viewed at regional offices of the Department of Environment, or from the department website.
