ROAD BANS TO TAKE EFFECT
The Department of Transportation has announced that seasonal load restrictions will take effect on selected highway sections in the NWT on Monday, April 21, at 12:00 (noon).

TRAVEL ADVISORIES


Bison Spotted - There is a small herd of bison southeast of Behchoko. Drivers should use extra caution on the highway between Yellowknife and Behchoko to avoid collisions with bison which may be on the road.

Information and updates on ferry, ice crossing, ice road, and winter road conditions and weight limits are available. Drivers are also advised to check weather information and road bulletins for road and ice crossing conditions before their departure.

The Tuktoyaktuk and Aklavik Ice Roads are closed for the season.

On the Dempster Highway, the Peel River ice crossing at km 74; the Mackenzie River Ice Crossing at Tsiigehtchic at km 143; and the Tsiigehtchic winter access are open to a maximum load capacity of 64,000 kilograms. With persisting cold weather, the ice crossings will likely stay in service until early next week. Small and low clearance vehicles are not recommended to travel on the ice crossings. Slippery, slushy, melt-water and rough conditions will be encountered.

KAKISA BRIDGE RESTRICTIONS

Restrictions on traffic across the Kakisa Bridge, near the junction of Hwy 1 and Hwy 3, are in effect. These restrictions require carriers crossing the Kakisa River Bridge to

  • Vehicle must come to a complete stop prior to proceeding onto the bridge.
  • Travel at 5 km/h down the centre of the bridge.
  • Maximum one vehicle on the bridge.
  • No braking or stopping on the bridge.
Maintenance of the bridge is ongoing, and drivers should exercise caution when passing those workers. The speed limit and restrictions on the bridge will be strictly enforced.


ROAD BANS

The Department of Transportation has placed seasonal load restrictions on NWT highways effective 1200 hours (noon) Monday, April 21st 2008. The Department of Transportation will enforce these load restrictions to best protect and preserve the NWT’s vital Highway System infrastructure.

General Notice for 100% restriction:
These highway sections are restricted to 100% of the allowable legal axle loading effective 12:00 (noon), Monday, April 21st 2008 and until further notice:

Hwy 1 Km 0 – Km 411
Hwy 2 Km 0 – Km 49
Hwy 3 Km 0 – Km 338
Hwy 4 Km 0 – Km 3.5, near the Giant Mine Access Road
Hwy 5 Km 0 – Km 266
Hwy 6 Km 0 – Km 38
Hwy 8 Km 0 – Km 272.5

Special Advisory Notice for 75% restriction:
These highway sections are restricted to 75% of the allowable legal axle loading effective 12:00 (noon), Monday, April 21st 2008 and until further notice:

Hwy 1 Km 411 – Km 548
Hwy 4 Km 3.5 – Km 28
Hwy 7 Km 0 – Km 254

Restrictions on commercial traffic crossing the Kakisa River Bridge will remain in effect.

Loads that are over 100,000 kg must continue to call ahead to get permission to cross any bridge or ice road.
