AIRPORT

Yellowknife’s airport (YZF) is the main airport in the NWT and is classified as a Gateway Hub. It is the only airport in the Northwest Territories that is part of the National Airports System. Air traffic control services, Instrument Landing System and Independent Secondary Surveillance Radar, which are provided by NAV Canada, are also available at the airport. The airport is operated by the Government of the Northwest Territories. The annual passenger traffic, both enplaned and deplaned, is over 500,000. In 2007, annual aircraft movements surpassed 70,000 movements. The airport is also a major cargo airport supplying mines and communities that do not year-round road access.

The airport has two asphalt runways. One is 7500’ x 150’ and the other is 5000’ x 150’. The most common types of aircraft flying in and out of Yellowknife are: Boeing 737, Dash 7/8, Hercules, Cessnas, Twin Otters, ATR 42, CRJ 200, Skyvan, Pilatus, Dornier and helicopters.

In an emergency, a Boeing 747 and other wide bodied aircraft can and have landed at the airport.

AIRPORT TERMINAL

The terminal facilities are easily accessible to disabled persons. The

AIRCRAFT FIRE FIGHTING SERVICES

Yellowknife Airport’s emergency services are provided by 10 trained airport firefighters. The airport is staffed by 2-3 firefighters during operating hours. Ambulance services are only 5 minutes away and additional firefighting services can be provided by the City of Yellowknife Fire Department.

PRIVATE AND CHARTER AIRCRAFT

Private and charter aircraft parking can be arranged by calling the Airport Duty Manager at (867) 445-5518. There are a number of float plane bases in Yellowknife’s Old Town area to accommodate commercial and private float plane operations. Space on the water for visiting aircraft is limited. Pilots are encouraged to consult Transport Canada’s Waterdome Flight Supplement or check with operators in Yellowknife for further information on parking and services.

PARKING

The airport has a pay and display parking lot that provides short term outdoor parking. Parking rates are as follows: first hour free, $1.00/hr thereafter to a maximum of $10/day. and up to 30 days can be purchased at one time. The parking pay machine accepts cash, VISA and Mastercard. Long term parking can also be arranged. Please call (867) 873-4680 for information on long term parking rates. THE SYSTEM IS CURRENTLY OUT FOR TENDER AND WILL BE REPLACED WITH A DIFFERENT SYSTEM IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

AIR CARRIERS

Yellowknife has a number of air carriers and helicopter companies that offer both passenger and cargo services on both a scheduled and charter basis.
