Construction Facts:
Innovative idea: During the construction work, the New Brunswick Departments of Transportation and Environment and Local Government teamed up to re-use fertilizer impacted soil that was found on the site of a former fertilizer storage area. The Departments used a green technology approach to clean up the contaminants. The material was spread on the slopes between Saint-Léonard and Grand Falls, then covered with topsoil. It was hydroseeded and mulched. As the new grass grew, the plants and the microbes that live on their root systems immediately began to stabilize the soil, keeping the fertilizer from expanding its reach into the environment. Within the first year, the grass and other plants extracted most of the nitrogen from the fertilizer-impacted soil. This environmentally friendly project saved the Department of Transportation approximately $660,000 because it no longer needed to monitor and store the soil Top
