April 30, 2008

FREDERICTON (CNB) - The following is released by the Department of Transportation and the Department of Public Safety's Emergency Measures Organization (NB-EMO) on Wednesday, April 30:

Water levels throughout the province are on the rise, and the Department of Transportation is supporting NB-EMO in its efforts to keep the public safe. The department is closing roads as the water rises, and providing any other support it can.

Following is an update on various locations:

-Route 105 - Maugerville to Jemseg

-Route 690 is closed from McGowan's Corner to Lakeville Corner

-Rusagonis Road - closed from Route 655 intersection to the Sunpoke Road intersection.

Gagetown Ferry is not operating.

-Darlings Island road access is 50 per cent water-covered.

-Carleton County and Madawaska County report water on roads and/or roads closed at a number of locations.

The department anticipates that there will be additional closures over today and the next few days. The best source for this information is the listing of flooded roads online at: http://www1.gnb.ca/cnb/transportation/flooding-e.asp

Driver safety is the priority, and motorists are reminded that water levels can change very quickly. Motorists should use extreme caution whenever they encounter water on the road. They should also be on the lookout for wildlife being driven from low-lying areas due to the high water levels.
