"This workshop was a follow-up to the adoption in Stokholm, in April 1998, of an Action Plan on Cultural Policies for Development. It was also in line with the increasing interest for culture demonstrated by international financial institutions, particularly in the World Bank which hosted two international conferences and created a framework for action on culture and sustainable development.
The Canadian Heritage workshop took place after the World Summit on the Arts and Culture organized in Ottawa by the Canada Council for the Arts; the workshop took advantage of the presence at the Summit of participants from all over the world. It pursued some of the broader socio-economic development issues raised at the Summit but from an applied policy perspective, examining concrete issues and case studies. Over 50 people participated in the workshop, representing several countries, international organizations and foundations."
