The Department of Environment is launching the kit, Action for the Environment! Waste Reduction in Schools, and website today to coincide with Earth Day 2008. The kit will be made available to all New Brunswick elementary schools. The resources have been designed to promote waste reduction and diversion in elementary schools and encourage students to adopt environment-friendly practices.

"A sustainable environment is vital to everyone's well-being and to continued economic growth, which is necessary in order for New Brunswick to be self-sufficient by 2026," Environment Minister Roland Haché said. "By promoting 'green' practices to schoolchildren, this information kit and website will encourage them to be good stewards of the environment and to take part in New Brunswick's efforts to achieve environmental sustainability."

The kit and website address key subjects and provide tips and how-to guides on implementing waste reduction efforts within schools. The kit contains five easy-to-hold cards as well as a keyword index, featuring simple definitions, to explain some of the more difficult concepts that are covered in the kit. The main subjects of the kit and website are recycling, composting, energy conservation, school ground greening and taking action on climate change.

"Raising public awareness, especially among young people, about the importance of 'green' practices is a great way to foster environmental sustainability in New Brunswick," Haché said. "These resources are an effective tool to promote recycling and other conservation programs in New Brunswick schools."

The Department of Environment will encourage schools to consult and work with their regional solid waste commission to meet the requirements of its particular recycling system.

Under the provincial Clean Environment Act, the regional solid waste commissions are mandated with the direct responsibility for all aspects of solid waste management in each region.
