FREDERICTON (CNB) - Nominations for the 2008 Environmental Leadership Awards are now being accepted by the Department of Environment.

The purpose of the awards program is to celebrate the achievements of New Brunswickers who have made an outstanding contribution to the protection of the environment and who have encouraged positive environmental action by others.

"It's very important that the environmental leaders in our province receive recognition for their dedication to the protection of our environment," Environment Minister Roland Haché said. "I ask all New Brunswickers to nominate any person, group, or business that has made exceptional efforts to be a good steward of the environment in New Brunswick."

The six Environmental Leadership Award categories this year are:

All nominations should include a project or activity description 250 words or less. The nomination period will end on June 20.

Following the deadline for nominations, an independent judging panel will choose the top candidates in each category. The nominees who are selected will be presented with an Environmental Leadership Award later this year.

"Every environmental leader can inspire many more New Brunswickers to be promoters of environmental sustainability, which our province must achieve in order to be self-sufficient by 2026," Haché said. "The Environmental Leadership Awards are a great way to show people of all ages that each of us can and should be a champion of the environment."
