Plaster Rock resident fined for violation of environment act (08/04/29)

NB 573

April 29, 2008

PLASTER ROCK (CNB) - A Plaster Rock resident has pleaded guilty in Grand Falls provincial court to a violation of the Clean Environment Act.

The Department of Environment charged William Bourgoyne, of 284 Main St., Plaster Rock, with failing to comply with a petroleum remediation order issued to him under the Petroleum Product Storage and Handling Regulation of the act.

In June 2006, the department was informed of a furnace oil leak at 91 Harrison St., Plaster Rock, which Bourgoyne owns. Further investigation by the department resulted in Bourgoyne being issued with the remediation order, which contained conditions that had to be met by a specific date.  The compliance date was extended as the result of request from Bourgoyne, but when the extended compliance date expired, he had not complied with any of the conditions in the order.

Judge J. Desjardins imposed a fine of $600, and placed Bourgoyne on probation, which requires him to remediate the property before Aug. 31, 2008.

Environment Minister Roland Haché encourages all New Brunswickers to be responsible stewards of the environment, and to report any infraction of environmental regulations in the province.
