The Applied Research Unit's purpose is to support the economic, social and cultural development, renewal and growth of all sectors of the western region of Newfoundland and Labrador, and to enhance the college's ability to promote research.

The unit attempts to match community needs to resources, expertise and services available at Grenfell. Associated with the Office of Research at Memorial University in St. John's the unit will also facilitate relationships between both campuses of the university and external partners.

Partnerships created through the ARU benefit both the region and the university. Regionally, businesses, organizations and individuals will realize increased access to resources, while eliminating the associated costs of accessing these resources outside the region.
