NSERC 2008 Innovation Challenge Awards - Call for Nominations
Open to master’s and Ph.D. students in natural sciences or engineering who are in their final year or have recently graduated and who can take a fresh look at their research with an eye to commercialization. The competition is sponsored by NSERC and GrowthWorks. Winners will receive the $10,000 grand prize or one of two $5,000 runner-up prizes. Honourable mention prizes for $1,000 each will also be available. Each university may nominate up to two eligible candidates. Nomination must be submitted by the university industrial liaison officers. Nominations must be received by May 15, 2008. International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for Ph.D. Study in the U.S.
Canada-U.S. Fulbright awards offer outstanding students and scholars in Canada and the United States a unique opportunity to participate in one of the world’s premier educational exchange programs. Designed to be among the most prestigious international scholarships in science and technology, the award carries a value of, on average, US$180,000 over three years. Deadline is May 31, 2008 for awards to be taken up in September 2009. Further details are available here.

Call for Nominations: The Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering
The prize recognizes interdisciplinary research excellence of the kind exemplified and inspired by the late Dr. Bertram N. Brockhouse, co-recipient of the 1994 Nobel Prize in Physics. It is awarded to an outstanding team of Canadian researchers from different disciplines who have combined their expertise to produce achievements of exceptional international significance in the natural sciences and engineering during the last six years. The winning team is awarded a $250,000 research grant. The nomination process and selection criteria are outlined on NSERC's website. The nomination deadline is June 1, 2008.

MEDSI/SRI 2008 Joint Conference
The 5th International Workshop on MEDSI and 15th SRI Conference is taking place June 10-13, 2008, in Saskatoon, SK. Abstract submission deadline is March 17, 2008. For full program information and registration, visit www.lightsource.ca.

NSERC Offers Assistance for the Planning of Multi-lateral Project Submissions under the 2008 Competition of the Inter-American Collaboration in Materials Research (CIAM) – Special Research Opportunities (SRO) Pre-research funding is available from NSERC to assist researchers who are planning a multi-lateral project submission under the upcoming fourth competition of the Inter-American Collaboration in Materials Research to be launched in Spring 2008. It is expected that the competition process will commence with the submission of a letter of intent in August 2008. U.K. -The Canadian Post-Doctoral Fellowship Research Program is funded by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT). The total value of the fellowship is $32,000. Applicants must be citizens of the U.K., must have completed a Ph.D degree within the last 2 years or have completed the Ph.D degree requirements before the beginning of the award, and must be accepted into a post-doctoral position at a recognized public Canadian university or affiliated research institute. Canadian Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (PDRG) 2008-2009 - Full details of where applications should be sent etc. are available at www.cscuk.org.uk. Inquiries should be directed to Selina Hannaford S.Hannaford@acu.ac.uk. This program was launched in 2006 and as a result of a strong response, and DFAIT decided to increase the number this year. The awards are for UK post docs to attend any Canadian university for the 12 month period, starting in the Autumn of 08. Select the following for Application Forms and Guidelines.

New WHO Web Portal for Clinical Trials - The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched the first global online search portal for clinical trials, including unpublished ones. CIHR contributed to this initiative through the requirement since 2004 that all randomized controlled trials funded by CIHR be publicly registered. The portal may be accessed here.
