Welcome to the Department of French and Spanish! We offer undergraduate programmes and courses in French Studies, Spanish Studies, and first- and second-year Italian, including language, literature, linguistics, and culture. We also offer a graduate programme (Master of Arts) in French Studies.
This website is an online student handbook that contains information on all aspects of the department's programmes and activities, and on student life in our department.

Courses
Here on the Courses page there are links to the university calendar descriptions of French, Spanish, and Italian courses, and to the current course offerings page of the Registrar's Office. You will also find a link to a page describing the different types of courses in French (Language Study, Study of Texts, French Linguistics, and Francophone Culture), with indication of the prerequisites required for each course. From this page you will be able to access an introduction to every one of our first-year, second-year, and third-year French courses, as well as to many of our fourth-year courses. Each introduction discusses the interest of the course, its content, textbooks, and evaluation.
Programmes
The Programmes page has links to regulations detailing the requirements for the honours, major, minor, and M.A. programmes. You will also find here information on the several study abroad opportunities offered by the department.Here you can access the very thorough section of this website devoted to the one-semester second-year Frecker Programme in the overseas French territory of Saint-Pierre, with academic information as well as details on cost, travel arrangements, accommodation, health care, everyday life in Saint-Pierre, etc. An application form and other documents can be downloaded.
You will also find links to the pages on our two-semester third-year programme at the Lycée Emmanuel Letournel in Saint-Pierre, the two-semester Canadian Third Year in Nice programme on the French Riviera, and the Spanish summer programme at the University of La Coruña on the northwestern coast of Spain.
For graduating students there are pages on exchange programmes which offer graduates the opportunity to be employed for an academic year as conversation teachers in a French high school or at Michel Montaigne University in Bordeaux.
Support for students
Here you will find information on the various kinds of support available to students of French and Spanish. For example, there is a description of the responsibilities of those faculty and staff who advise students at different levels: the secretarial staff, the Department Head, the Spanish Co-ordinator, the First-year French Co-ordinator, the French Undergraduate Advisor, the French Study Abroad Officer, and the Graduate Officer, with contact information for each of these. There is information on scholarships and awards and on the many facilities available to students: the departmental office (SN 4023), the Seminar Room, the Multimedia Language Centre, the Audio Laboratory, the French Help Centre, and conversation classes. There is also information on special programmes and on the French and Spanish student societies. In addition, on this page there are details for students on policies concerning plagiarism and other forms of academic misconduct and on university sexual harassment policies.
The pages on the Multimedia Language Centre describe the software available for students in the centre, and include direct access to online French exercises for students working from a computer on the university campus.
On the Support page you will also find a link to a document detailing the different opportunities for studying French outside of Newfoundland and Labrador, such as the Explore summer language bursary programme at a French-language institution in Quebec or the Maritimes, the federal Official Languages Monitor programme, and other opportunities. This page explains how you can obtain transfer credit for French courses taken outside the province.
Faculty and Staff
This page gives contact information for all academic and office staff, including regular department members, full-time term appointees, part-time per-course instructors, the Director of the Language Laboratories, and honorary research professors. There are also links to individual pages for each regular faculty member with information on her or his academic degrees and research interests.
