CIHR opportunities
The new Canadian Institutes of Health Research will be organized
through a framework of virtual institutes which will link and
support researchers pursuing common goals. To provide leadership,
each new institute will be seeking individuals to serve as scientific
directors and on an Institute Advisory Board. Information on
these opportunities is available through the Call for Nominations/Careers
link on the CIHR Web site at www.cihr.ca
Climate
and atmospheric research
The Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences
(CFCAS) is now accepting grant applications for network proposals
and research proposals for funding in excess of $200,000 annually
and also for research proposals for funding of up to $200,000
a year. The call for proposals, submission forms and supporting
documentation may be found on CFCASs Web site at www.cfcas.org.
The submission deadline for applications is Sept. 29.
Research
on housing
The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation is inviting applications
under its External Research Program. This program provides up
to 20 research grants each year to a maximum of $20,000 per grant
for research into a range of social, economic, and technical
aspects of housing and related fields. Applications must be postmarked
by Sept. 30.
NATO science
fellowships
NATO Science Fellowships offers an opportunity for recent doctoral
graduates from central and eastern European NATO partner countries
to pursue postdoctoral research in the natural sciences and engineering
at Canadian universities. Fellows must work under the supervision
of a faculty member who holds an NSERC grant or industrial research
chair at the time of nomination. Fellowships provide an annual
stipend of $33,000 for two years as well as payment of allowable
travel expenses for fellows and their families. Candidates must
be nominated by the proposed supervisor and host universities
by deadline Oct. 1.
Huntington
Society of Canada fellowships
The Huntington Society of Canada and the Canadian Institutes
of Health Research have announced a joint partnership to support
one postdoctoral fellowship ($35,000 per year) and one doctoral
research award ($19,030 per year) to candidates who will be undertaking
full-time research on Huntington disease at a Canadian research
institution. Both awards are for an initial two-year term with
the possibility of support for a third year. Applications for
the doctoral award must be submitted by Oct. 15 while the applications
for the postdoctoral fellowship are due by Nov. 1.
Japanese
studies
The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC)
has announced that a new Special Grants program cycle has been
approved for Canada by the Japan Foundation. Starting with the
2001-2002 competition, AUCC will administer both the Japan Foundation
Special Grants Program for Japanese Studies and the Tanaka Fund
Program. The combined funding available through both programs
for 2001-2002 will be approximately $200,000. Revised program
guidelines will be available in September with applications to
be submitted by early November.
