More than 11 people have died and dozens are missing after typhoon Chanchu crossed the South China Sea on its way to the highly populated areas of China's Guangdong province Thursday.
Chinese authorities ordered 905,000 people from their homes as the typhoon and its 158 km/h winds headed toward cities in Guangdong and Fujian provinces in southern China.
An estimated 100,000 ships and boats were ordered to return to harbour as the storm approached, but at least 27 Vietnamese sailors remained unaccounted for after their boats sank in Chinese waters.

The same weather system killed 37 people and destroyed thousands of homes in the Philippines last weekend.
Hong Kong got a break when the typhoon, one of the most violent to strike the area in years, veered suddenly and missed the island.
The storm also caused serious damage in Vietnam and is threatening Japan.
