Rein in the kiddy-harness trend

LEWIS CARROLL would be proud of the Pumpkin Regatta. The author of Alice in Wonderland would appreciate the strange spectacle of 60 gargantuan pumpkins, painted in various colours and designs, bobbing across a lake on a bright October afternoon.

That image alone would give Windsor’s annual pumpkin festival the feel of a mad hatter tea party. Add to the picture 60 paddlers, each kneeling inside one of the pumpkins and splashing mightily to reach the finish line before capsizing, and you have the kind of absurd scene in which the Chesire Cat and the Queen of Hearts would be perfectly at home.
