Salami at Salumi

In Seattle, Mario Batali's dad has the cure for your meat cravings

From Saturday's Globe and Mail

Armandino Batali's unique artisan cured meats are so popular, Salumi patrons will wait upwards of an hour for their favourite purchase. In this small neighbourhood deli in the heart of Seattle's historic Pioneer Square district, Batali - yes, Mario's father - preserves and promotes the handmade food traditions of Italy.

Must-haves include the meatball and porchetta sandwiches, and a cured meats platter featuring eight salamis and cheeses. The red wine on the tables is communal - so be sure to pour yourself a glass to go with your meal.

And, for those who fancy watching foodies test their mettle, and who want to find out whose salami, coppa or prosciutto is a cut above, next weekend the third Salumi Curing Contest is being held during Festa Italiana. The competition (at the Seattle Center) is open to amateur salumists, chefs and food professionals. No orange crocs necessary.
