Germany's Marcel Siem eagled the par-5 ninth hole for an 8-under 64 and a one-stroke lead Thursday in the Avantha Masters.

“I can't remember the last time that I shot 64,” said Siem, who won the 2004 Dunhill Championship for his lone European tour title. “It must be at least three years ago, so I am pretty happy with that. It's definitely my best round for a few years.”

Taiwan's Chan Yih-shin opened with a 65, also eagling No. 9, in the tournament sanctioned by the European and Asian tours and the Professional Golf Tour of India.

Thailand's Thaworn Wiratchant was three strokes back at 67 along with India's Rahil Gangjee, Australia's Andrew Dodt, England's Barry Lane and John Parry, Dutchman Robert-Jan Derksen and Singapore's Lam Chih Bing.

Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke shot a 71, and Indian star Jeev Milkha Singh had a 72 on the Arnold Palmer-designed DLF Golf and Country Club course.
