HOCKEY / NHL ROSTER FREEZE IN EFFECT FEB. 12-28 FOR OLYMPIC BREAK; NHL TRADE DEADLINE IS 3 P.M. (EST) MARCH 3

VANCOUVER

Plans Atop the Northwest Division and in a tight race with the Colorado Avalanche, they are looking to bolster their depth and add physical presence.

Needs They could use a checking forward for the third line (such as Carolina Hurricanes centre Matt Cullen), and a depth defenceman for their battered blueline.

Available Goaltender Cory Schneider is an NHL-ready top prospect, but his route to the Canucks crease is blocked by Roberto Luongo.

Matthew Sekeres

CALGARY

Plans They already underwent a major overhaul last weekend, adding six new position players to a team freefalling out of the playoff picture.

Needs A playmaking centre to complement Jarome Iginla. Former Toronto Maple Leafs centre Matt Stajan gets first chance to audition and, if he is found wanting, a Plan B will be required.

Available With a surplus of wingers, Calgary is in a position to package players such as David Moss and Dustin Boyd to get one A-level forward.

Eric Duhatschek

EDMONTON

Plans Divest themselves of any and all marketable assets to get payroll as low as it can go in a lost year for the team.

Needs To introduce a franchise player, à la Taylor Hall, into the organization through the entry draft, and begin the rebuilding process from the ground up.

Available Andrew Cogliano, Tom Gilbert, Ethan Moreau, Patrick O'Sullivan and, if his hand heals in time, injured defenceman Sheldon Souray.

Eric Duhatschek

TORONTO

Plans GM Brian Burke blew up his roster, shipping out six players and adding star defenceman Dion Phaneuf and goalie J.S. Giguère. But Burke says he's not done yet.

Needs A centre who can set up Phil Kessel and a couple of wingers to beef up the scoring.

Available If Burke gets an offer from a playoff contender of an elite player plus draft picks, defenceman Tomas Kaberle might be persuaded to waive his no-trade clause. On the block: Alexei Ponikarovsky and blueliners Garnet Exelby and Jeff Finger.

David Shoalts

OTTAWA

Plans The Sens have righted their ship and seem likely to stand pat unless they can acquire some more offence without parting with valued assets.

Needs Offensive depth to offset the loss of winger Nick Foligno (broken leg), and a physical defenceman.

Available Former 50-goal man Jonathan Cheechoo is a shell of his former self and has a year left at $3-million (U.S.). The Senators would love to shed his contract.

Sean Gordon

MONTREAL

Plans The Habs could be sellers just as easily as they might be buyers, depending on whether they are in the playoff hunt.

Needs A scoring winger to fill the void left by injured Mike Cammalleri, a big-bodied two-way centre and a right-handed puck-mover on the blueline.

Available Defenceman Roman Hamrlik, whose $5.5-million salary will eat up precious cap space next season, and smoking hot goaltender Jaroslav Halak, who is an arbitration-eligible restricted free agent at season's end.
