Canadian Forest Service links

The sustainable use of Canada's forests and the maintenance of Canada's share of the world market of wood and wood products greatly depend on our ability to improve the productivity of managed forests. With this in mind, the Canadian Forest Service (CFS) is generating knowledge and exploring biotechnology applications aimed at:

• improving forest regeneration;
• protecting forests using biological pest control methods;
• diagnosing forest pests and invasive alien pests;
• assessing the environmental impact of biotechnology-derived products;
• conserving the genetic diversity of forests; and
• fostering the development of a bioeconomy through forest bioproducts, including non-timber forest products.

Biotechnology research is conducted at CFS research centres and is integrated nationwide under the auspices of the Canadian Biotechnology Strategy. The BioPortal provides updated online information about the activities of the various departments and agencies involved in biotechnology.

As the largest Canadian organization involved in forest biotechnology, the CFS also plays a key role in:

• defining strategic research orientations,
• advising on policy developments and environmental regulations,
• developing skilled workers,
• increasing public awareness of forest biotechnology, and
• coordinating activities with industry, academia, and other governmental departments and agencies.
