Surveillance for Aquatic Animal Diseases

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s National Aquatic Animal Health Program’s surveillance section

  • analyzes data and contextual evidence for generating strategic surveillance plans, and
  • substantiates the health status of aquatic animal regulated diseases at different levels  (e.g., region, zone, compartment) and provides for the early detection of new and emerging diseases.

The section functions as the focal point for the collection, analysis and dissemination of aquatic animal surveillance information, and the provision of epidemiological advice and assessments.

This information facilitates access to domestic and international markets by providing the basis for health certification and domestic disease control measures. It also provides the necessary information for international reporting purposes, as required by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
