Importation of Aquatic Animals Into Canada

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s National Aquatic Animal Health Program’s import section

  • implements controls to prevent aquatic animal diseases from being introduced into Canada, and
  • safeguards Canadas natural aquatic animal resources.

Exemptions for aquatic animals used as pets or for personal use do require the owner to verify the intended use of the animal. These exemptions are outlined in the Health of Animals Regulations.

Import Permits

Import requirements are determined through a standardized process. Canadian import permits will be required for susceptible species of finfish, molluscs, and crustaceans. These animals could be refused entry if the permit requirements are not met. To ensure all clients, importers and brokers fully understand the new requirements, a coming into force date of December 10, 2011 has been established.

Most live terrestrial animal imports into Canada require a valid import permit. Permits contain specific requirements based on the health risks associated with the animal, the origin, and other relevant health information. Import permits for aquatic animals will be similar, and imports will require a health certification from the country of origin that the animals to be exported to Canada meet its aquatic animal health requirements.

Import permits for live terrestrial animals and other regulated products can be found on the CFIA website. Importers should be aware that any conditions associated with animal imports are posted on the Automated Import Reference System (AIRS).
