    OTTAWA, June 19, 2013 – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today welcomed the Royal Assent and Coming Into Force of Private Member's Bill C-309, the Concealment of Identity Act. Sponsored by Blake Richards, M.P. for Wild Rose, the Act targets individuals who participate in a riot or an unlawful assembly while wearing a mask to conceal their identity.

The legislation amends the Criminal Code to provide greater protection from nuclear terrorism.

    OTTAWA, June 19, 2013 – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today welcomed the Royal Assent of Private Member’s Bill S-209, an Act to amend the Criminal Code (prize fights). Sponsored by Senator Bob Runciman in April 2012, the legislation permits provinces and territories to authorize other types of prize fights beyond boxing, to include professional mixed martial arts and amateur combative sports, such as judo and karate.

  • Legislation to Double Victim Surcharge Receives Royal Assent

    Today, the Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, announced the Increasing Offenders' Accountability for Victims Act has received Royal Assent. This legislation increases the accountability of offenders to their victims by doubling the victim surcharge they must pay, and ensuring the surcharge is applied to all offenders.

  • Not Criminally Responsible Reform Act Passes in the House Of Commons

    OTTAWA, June 19, 2013 – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today welcomed the passing in the House of Commons of Bill C-54, the Not Criminally Responsible Reform Act. This legislation would ensure that public safety is the paramount consideration in the decision-making process with respect to accused persons found Not Criminally Responsible on Account of Mental Disorder (NCR). Bill C-54 will now move to the Senate for further study.

  • Government of Canada Funds Programs to Help Victims of Child Abuse

    CALGARY, January 22, 2013 – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced $185,000 in funding for the Canadian Society for the Investigation of Child Abuse (CSICA). The funding will support the organization as it works toward implementing a voluntary national certification program for forensic child interviewers, and will also be used to help cover the organization’s operational expenses.
