Real Beginners ("Niveau 0")

The program Introduction au français langue seconde (Beginners) is targeted at true beginners who have never taken a course in French. It includes a teaching guide, the learner's manual and two CD-ROMs. The approach stresses communication. The manual contains three modules, whereby learners acquire the vocabulary appropriate to specific situations, as well as concepts of grammar and phonetics. Each module begins with a series of video clips presenting a public service workplace and ends with role plays and simulations.

Brisons la glace is self-learning software for complete beginners in French as a second language. It contains an introduction to French and enables you to acquire a few basic concepts.

This CD-ROM allows you to choose between two learning modes with identical linguistic content: the free mode and the guided mode. In either mode you can use voice recognition software to compare your pronunciation and intonation with the teacher's.

It runs a total of about 25 hours. However, since this is a self-learning tool, the time spent on each part of the program can vary with the user.

A and B Levels

The Programme de français langue seconde – Niveaux A et B (PFL2 – A et B) is designed to attain the A and B levels of bilingualism in the federal government. It will help you to achieve sufficient communicative competence to interact efficiently in French in day-to-day job-related tasks.

The program takes a communicative, task-oriented approach to learning a second language. It covers the main elements of language and communication including:

Auto-évaluation – Activités orales accompanies training objectives 1 to 33 of the Programme de français langue seconde – Niveaux A et B. This material contains oral question/answer type exercises covering the functional content of the training objectives. The level of language used reflects the verbal communication of the workplace. For each question, two examples of answers are given so that the learners can compare their answers to those provided. Then, in an interview simulation, they can answer the questions again without interruption. The scripts for this material, entirely geared to develop oral language components, are reserved for teachers.

Level C

Sessions préparatoires 1 et 2 are classroom review periods each lasting two weeks. They enable learners to consolidate Level B language skills: language functions, grammar, vocabulary and oral comprehension.

  • Session préparatoire 1 presents the various ways of introducing oneself, and requesting or providing information:
    • describing present, future or past situations;
    • describing tasks and processes;
    • requesting or expressing an opinion.
  • Session préparatoire 2 presents the various ways of stating, analysing and explaining a problem:
    • reporting results, changes or suggestions;
    • stating assumptions;
    • expressing one's point of view, or reformulating the views of others;
    • comparing situations;
    • convincing;
    • qualifying;
    • making concessions.

The Programme de français langue seconde – Niveau C (PFL2 – C) is a program on DVD that runs 240 hours. It consists of four modules based on oral communication through study and practice of 23 language functions. Using actual documents (articles, videos and recordings), 21 subjects of interest to public servants are addressed.

Grammaire d'appoint : cahier d'autoapprentissage is for learners of French as a second language at Level C who want to develop their mastery of French grammar. This tool enables independent review of the grammar points suggested in the Programme de français langue seconde – Niveau C (PFL2 – C). These grammar points have already been seen in Level B; the Grammaire d'appoint : cahier d'autoapprentissage includes new summary tables and more complex usage contexts.

The "Amélioration de la prononciation" Collection

The Amélioration de la prononciation collection is for Anglophones who are beginning to learn French, or who are having difficulty with pronunciation at any level.

The collection is designed to develop the ability to understand and reproduce the basic sounds, rhythms and intonation of French.

The courses Voyelles orales, Quelques consonnes et phénomènes prosodiques and Les nasales et les semi-consonnes are designed for classroom delivery. They consist of a teaching guide, answer sheets and audio cassettes. The teaching guide includes exercises, answer sheets, transcripts and answer keys.

For teachers only, the Outil d'évaluation consists of two parts: auditory discrimination (Listening) and oral output (Speaking). Used in pre-testing, it provides a diagnosis to guide the learning process; used in post-testing, it is a means of assessing progress. The material consists of a user guide, an answer key, a result sheet and an audio cassette.
