Government of Canada Reinforces its Commitment to Reconciliation with Aboriginal Peoples

Halifax, Nova Scotia (October 29, 2011) – The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, is participating today in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s   third national event in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

“It is an honour to be here today at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s third national event amongst so many individuals who are involved in the historic and ongoing process of healing and reconciliation between Aboriginal people and all Canadians,” stated Minister Duncan.

The Government of Canada’s gesture of reconciliation for this event includes a contribution of $200,000 to support travel and accommodations for former students to participate in this event. This is in addition to the recent announcement that Canada will remember the legacy of Indian Residential Schools through the permanent installation of stained glass artwork in Parliament.

Many departments have contributed to the success of the Halifax event. The Department of National Defence   has once again provided a contingent of Canadian Rangers as an Honour Guard for this event. "Aboriginal members of the Canadian Forces have contributed to peace and security, at home and overseas, for over one hundred years," said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence.  "This Government honours the contributions of Aboriginal members of the Canadian Forces and we remain committed to forging new partnerships between Aboriginal peoples and the Canadian Forces." 

In addition, Health Canada is providing mental health and emotional supports for all participants at Truth and Reconciliation Commission events. These services are provided by Elders, Aboriginal community health workers, psychologists, or social workers.

Since 2008 when the Prime Minister delivered the historic Apology to former students of Indian Residential Schools, the Government has continued to work with aboriginal peoples across Canada in the spirit of reconciliation. Just last week, twenty-three projects were selected for the Advocacy and Public Information Program to build new partnerships and promote and strengthen healing across Canada. The Government of Canada is focused on a renewed relationship between Aboriginal peoples, their families and communities, and all Canadians.
