For Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC), sustainable development means considering how decisions impact the social, economic and environmental long-term well-being of Aboriginal and Northern communities.

Sustainable development is striving to "meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

AANDC’s Approach to Sustainable Development

Departmental sustainable development strategies are a government-wide initiative used to strengthen accountability and illustrate how AANDC, and other government departments, are managing sustainable development. The Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy (DSDS) also emphasizes AANDC’s efforts in supporting and contributing to the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy.
