Daily Performances

The Ceremonial Guard performs public duties

The Changing the Guard Ceremony

Performed at 10 a.m. on Parliament Hill, from late June to the end of August. The first performance is generally conducted on the Friday prior to Canada Day (July 1st).

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Sentries posted from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the National War Memorial on Confederation Square (corner of Elgin and Wellington).

Rideau Hall

Sentries posted from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Rideau Hall, the residence of His Excellency, the Governor General, located at 1 Sussex Drive.

The Ceremonial Guard performs public duties in Ottawa annually from late June to the end of August.

The public duties of the Ceremonial Guard include:

  • Posting Guards at the residence of His Excellency, the Governor General of Canada;
  • Performing the daily Changing the Guard ceremony on Parliament Hill
  • Providing daily sentries at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial
  • Posting Guards of Honour for visiting heads of state or other dignitaries
  • Participating in official public or military functions in the capital
  • Performing during public concerts or other ceremonies to promote the Canadian Armed Forces

The Ceremonial Guard at Rideau Hall, Ottawa

Rideau Hall

The Band of the Ceremonial Guard often participates in the Governor General's Summer Concert series held on the grounds of Rideau Hall. In addition, the Ceremonial Guard mounts the Guard of Honour for His Excellency on Canada Day on Parliament Hill and performs extended public duties by providing an overnight presence at Rideau Hall during visits by members of the Royal family.

Royal Visits

The Guard has participated in all the Royal visits since 1959, as well as many visits by heads of government in Ottawa.
