Canadian Forces National Investigation Service

The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service (CFNIS) was established in 1997 with a mandate to investigate serious and sensitive matters related to DND and the CF. It performs a function similar to that of a Major Crime unit of the RCMP or large municipal police agency. The CFNIS was created to address lessons learned through our experiences in Somalia, the Former Republic of Yugoslavia and on other difficult deployed missions. The creation of the CFNIS also fulfilled recommendations made by the Dickson and Belzile commissions that the Military Justice System required an investigative agency that was independent of the chain of command.

CF Military Police Academy

The CF Military Police Academy (CFMPA) was established 1 April 1999 when the Intelligence Training Company was detached from the former Canadian Forces School of Intelligence and Security. At this time, the unit was transformed into a distinct Military Police/Security training establishment.

The primary mission of the CFMPA is to provide career and specialist training to Regular and Reserve Force members of the Military Police Branch and security-related training to non-Branch personnel of the Regular and Reserve Forces. The CFMPA also provides training to personnel from other government and law enforcement agencies and to foreign nationals under the Military Training Assistance Program.

Community Commitment

The Canadian Forces Military Police are totally committed to providing the highest degree of professional service to the communities they serve. Partnerships have been formed with other groups and service providers and the delivery of policing and investigative services has been modernized to better serve community needs. The Military Police Community-Based Policing Strategy is designed to ensure that all Military Police members are responsive and inclusive of the community they serve.

Victim Services

The Military Police are also committed to increasing their focus on the needs of victims of crime. A national program has been instituted where an MP member regularly contacts crime victims and complainants. In practical terms, this commitment translates into effective participation into the area of victims' relief by the MP. It also fosters the involvement of several other support agencies within the Canadian Forces and the Department of National Defence and may also involve the participation of our civilian partners.
