Manitoba Judicial Appointments Announced

OTTAWA, March 8, 2013 - The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

The Honourable William J. Burnett, Associate Chief Justice of Her Majesty’s Court of Queen’s Bench for Manitoba, is appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal, to replace Mr. Justice Richard L. Chartier, who was appointed Chief Justice of Manitoba.

Mr. Justice Burnett was appointed a judge of the Court of Queen’s Bench in 2009 and as Associate Chief Justice in 2011. Prior to his appointment, he was a partner with Thompson Dorfman Sweatman in Winnipeg, where he focused on civil and appellate litigation. He received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Manitoba in 1977 and was admitted to the Bar of Manitoba in 1978.

Mr. Justice Burnett is a past member of the Law Society of Manitoba, the Manitoba Bar Association and the Canadian Bar Association. He was involved in numerous community and charitable organizations.

The Honourable Herbert Rempel, a judge with the Family Division of Her Majesty’s Court of Queen’s Bench for Manitoba, is appointed a Judge of the Court of Queen’s Bench, to replace the Honourable Justice D. Cameron, who was appointed to the Manitoba Court of Appeal on November 2, 2012.

Mr. Justice Rempel was appointed to the Family Division of the Court of Queen’s Bench on December 2, 2011. Prior to his appointment, he practised with Pullan Kammerloch Frolingerin. His main areas of practice were adoption law, corporate and commercial law, wills and estates, and civil litigation. He was also an associate with Loewen Martens & Rempel from 1991 to 2003 and with Booth Dennehy from 1988 to 1991. He received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Manitoba and was called to the Bar of Manitoba in 1988. He articled with Canadian Pacific Limited and later served as a law clerk with the Manitoba Court of Appeal.

Mr. Justice Rempel is a former member of the Estate Planning Council of Winnipeg, the Canadian and Manitoba Bar Associations, and the Canadian Association of Farm Advisors. He was a lecturer at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Law and an executive member of numerous community organizations.

These appointments are effective immediately.
