Manitoba Judicial Appointments Announced

OTTAWA, June 7, 2013 – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

The Honourable Sheldon W. Lanchbery, a sole practitioner in Deloraine, is appointed a judge of Her Majesty's Court of Queen's Bench of Manitoba, to replace Mr. Justice S.I. Perlmutter, who was appointed Associate Chief Justice on March 8, 2013.

Mr. Justice Lanchbery received a Bachelor of Arts in 1976 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1979, both from the University of Manitoba. He was admitted to the Bar of Manitoba in 1980.

Mr. Justice Lanchbery has been a sole practitioner since 1981. Prior to that, he was an associate with Clement Potter & Co. in Brandon. His main areas of practice were administrative law, wills and estates, corporate law, family law, and municipal law with a niche in oil and gas mining.

Mr. Justice Lanchbery has been the Chair and a legal member of the Office of the Commissioner for Review Tribunals for the Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security since 2006.   He is active in community life, serving on many community boards. He has served as president of Hockey Manitoba and was Chair of the Board for Hockey Canada.
           
The Honourable Gwen B. Hatch, a lawyer with Tapper Cuddy in Winnipeg, is appointed a judge of Her Majesty’s Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba, Family Division, to replace Mr. Justice H. Rempel, who was appointed a judge of the Court of Queen’s Bench on March 8, 2013.

Madam Justice Hatch received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Winnipeg in 1978 and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Manitoba in 1981. She was admitted to the Bar of Manitoba in 1982.

 Madam Justice Hatch has been a partner with Tapper Cuddy LLP since 2010. Previously, she practised with D’Arcy & Deacon from 1987 to 2010, and with Savino & Company from 1983 to 1987. Her main practice areas were family law, wills and estates litigation.
