Statement — Minister Kenney issues statement celebrating Canada Day

Ottawa, July 1, 2013 — The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement on Canada Day:

“Canada Day is a day of celebration for Canadians across the country. It is a time to celebrate our identity, wave our flag with pride, and commemorate the birth of our Dominion with family, friends and fellow citizens.

“On this special day, we celebrate what it means to be Canadian by reflecting on our history, symbols, and institutions – those that define us as Canadians. We also acknowledge our shared rights and responsibilities as citizens.

“To celebrate the day, we hold special citizenship ceremonies in communities across Canada. This year, more than 1,500 people at 33 different ceremonies will take the Oath and become new citizens on Canada’s birthday.

“As we prepare to welcome the newest members of our Canadian family, let us recognize the hard work, commitment, and sacrifices of the Canadians who have built our prosperous nation. Let us also pay tribute to our brave men and women in uniform, including those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom and champion our values – human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

“As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I wish all Canadians a safe and happy Canada Day celebration.”
